Four names, and the metals in a star

Two Burbidges, Fowler, and Hoyle write how stars build the elements. The iron in a nail has a stellar address.

The factory

Hydrogen burns to helium. Helium, in a giant, makes carbon. Further burnings make oxygen, neon, magnesium, silicon. In a supernova, heavier nuclei form. Margaret and Geoffrey Burbidge, Fowler, and Hoyle write the pathways in 1957, matching abundances and nuclear rates. The metals Kirchhoff read in the Sun have a history. They were not there in the first stars in the same amounts.

Four authors. Two countries. A paper long enough to be a small book. This is not a lone observer under a hush.

ASTRONOMY

Stellar nucleosynthesis is why a spectrum is a genealogy as well as a composition. Payne’s hydrogen remains. The rest of the periodic table, in the amounts we see, is processed light. Later work revises rates and sites. The 1957 paper is the map that made the revisions possible.
