The slower they beat, the brighter they are

At Harvard a woman sits with photographic plates of a distant cloud. She times the pulses. The slow ones are the bright ones.

The plates

Henrietta Swan Leavitt joined Harvard College Observatory as a volunteer in 1895, later as staff. Edward Pickering’s observatory had a factory of plates and a staff of women computers who measured them. Annie Jump Cannon classified spectra. Leavitt was given variable stars.

The Small Magellanic Cloud is far away. For her purpose the stars in it sit at one distance. That fact, boring on its face, is the lever. If they are all at one distance, differences in apparent brightness are differences in the stars themselves.

The relation

She writes down periods. She writes down brightness. The longer the pulse, the brighter the star. On 3 March 1912 Harvard College Observatory Circular 173 prints “Periods of 25 Variable Stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud.” A clock in the star has become a ruler on the sky.

Hertzsprung, Shapley, and Hubble used the relation. Galaxies became measurable. The universe became larger than one galaxy. The numbers have been recalibrated many times. The idea remains.

EVIDENCE

The plates still exist in the Harvard Plate Stacks. Leavitt did not live to see Hubble’s 1929 result. She died in 1921. The labor is hers. The later fame is not a reason to make the circular sound like a prophecy.
