Sopdet. Then Isis. Then the Dog Star. Egypt timed the year by a heliacal rising. Greece kept the dog. The rock numbered 42 still carries Isis.

A brilliant main-sequence lamp and a faint white-dwarf companion, B. Period about 50.1 years.

Brightest star in the night sky. Distance about 8.60 ly. Apparent magnitude about −1.46.

Binary: Sirius A (A-type main sequence) and Sirius B (white dwarf). Orbital period 50.1284 years; semimajor axis about 20 AU.

The companion that had to be inferred

  1. 1844Bessel inferred an unseen companion from a wobble in Sirius’s proper motion.
  2. 1862Alvan Graham Clark resolved Sirius B at the eyepiece.
  3. 1915Walter Adams took the spectrum that showed B to be a white dwarf.
  4. Egypt, long before the catalogSopdet marked the year by a heliacal rising. Greece kept the Dog Star. Identification with Isis is religious tradition, not spectroscopy.

Living

The visible star represents what the eye can love at first glance. The companion is the work of learning to see.

Myth names the Dog Star. Physics names a binary. The Book keeps both clocks.

On a 28 June 1971 Pretoria chart used as a working instrument, Sirius sits Cancer 13°41′, near the public Ascendant and Mercury. Soft off: the chart is an instrument, not a certificate of private fate.
