The list

A scribe cuts wedges into clay. The text he copies is already old. It lists stars and constellations: sixty-six of them, arranged in three paths across the sky, the paths of Enlil, Anu, and Ea.

It also lists heliacal risings against an ideal year of 360 days. When this light returns at dawn, this stretch of the year has begun. The sky is being used as a calendar that can be copied.

A few of the rising-stars as the later scholarly tradition reads them. Names and identifications remain argued. This is a reading of a list, not the tablet.

What they could know

They could know recurrence well enough to teach it. They could know that a star’s first appearance before sunrise is a date, if you have a horizon and a list. They could not know distances in light-years, or that the Plough Star is a physical sun. Those are later offices.

The labor is copying, checking, and keeping the list alive across centuries of tablets. Most of the hands are unnamed. That is not a failure of the record. It is the record.

THE FENCE

Do not say “ancient people knew the stars.” Say Babylonian scribes, working in a named tradition, copied MUL.APIN. Sirius appears in this sky as one rising among others. It is not Egypt’s Sopdet on another tablet.
