The inherited table
Tycho Brahe dies in 1601. Johannes Kepler, in Prague, has the Mars observations. He tries to save a circular orbit, then an egg-shaped path, then a system that still will not fit. The leftover error is eight minutes of arc. Tycho’s instruments were better than eight minutes. Kepler writes that those eight minutes led the way to a reformation of all of astronomy.
He does not see an ellipse in the sky. He sees a table that will not close. The night is on the page.

What the error became
Astronomia Nova, 1609: Mars moves on an ellipse with the Sun at one focus. Equal areas in equal times. That is not yet a law for all the planets. It is a solution for this wandering star. The stars in the background are the frame the planet is measured against. Without Tycho’s fixed-star work, the eight minutes would have been noise.
