Bessel measured one parallax. Hipparcos measures them in bulk, from above the air, scanning, not staring. The numbers come down as catalogues: positions, motions, distances for more than a hundred thousand stars, a coarser million more. A distance to a star is no longer a life’s work. It is a column.

The motor fails. The orbit is wrong. The team rebuilds the reduction. The catalogue still arrives. Failure belongs in the record.
