Merope: The Star That Hides at 4.2
She has a name. She has a place in the sky. And for thousands of years she has been the one no one can quite see.
The original telling remains. Magnitude about 4.18, often printed 4.2. Bright enough to be there, easy to miss beside glare and dust. Averted vision is a laboratory method, not a fate.
Later looking made the object of difficulty more precise. The night does not hide Merope. She is fourth among the named sisters. Thirty to thirty-six arcseconds away sits IC 349, Barnard’s knot, about thirteenth magnitude. Tempel’s wide veil is NGC 1435. She lights what she did not make.
The same light that gilds the knot drowns it. Look at her and the knot disappears. Cover her and the knot remains. The seeing survives. The aperture does not create the star.
