M42: The Nursery at Position 42
The 42nd object on Messier’s list was a faint patch of light in Orion. A stellar nursery. Birth, not a comet.
Charles Messier wanted to stop wasting time on objects that were not comets. Number 42 is the Great Orion Nebula.
